What is new in this version?

MVH 2.2 comes hot on the tail of our last release with great new features. Some of the most notable changes are mentioned below.

A new MVH User Profile screen - The User Profile screen has an updated layout.

New Welcome and Help screens - Both the Welcome screen and the Help screen have updated layouts allowing for more flexible content maintenance and delivery.

Better Homes & Gardens Channel - MVH has its' first new channel, the Better Homes & Gardens Channel. This channel features content from the most recent Better Homes and Gardens television episodes. If Better Homes and Gardens feature a room makeover or backyard renovation, then there is a good chance that they will make the same room or outdoor area available in MVH, complete with all the furniture, paints and plants presented in the show.

The Better Homes and Gardens Channel comes with its' own interface skin, changing the look of the MVH controls and catalogue.

This new channel also comes with its' own:

catalogue - a selection of rooms and assets specific to the building projects presented in the channel

welcome screen - the default landing page featuring information regarding the channel and links to the Help screen

Changes to the User Interface to support multiple Channels - the Tool Bar contains a new button that allows you to move between MVH channels at any time. Most channels will feature a reduced catalogue containing a selection of assets and rooms specific to the purposes of the channel so you may need to move between channels to access all of the content you require for a specific design project. The Australian Home Building Channel will always contain the complete catalogue of free-to-use assets and is recommended for all general building and design projects.

Faster House Downloads
v2.1 house download speed has been increased by about 400%. Yep you read it right about 4 times faster to download a house.

Faster Lightmapping
v2.0 introduced multi core lightmapping and v2.1 now extends lightmapping to its own process to speed it up even further.

Improved image quality
We pride ourselves on having the best image quality of any real time 3D program on the market today. Not resting on our past work v2.1 delivers with even better quality in our reflections, sun lighting and shadows.

Simplified Log-in
Version 2 was the first time MVH used a log-in system rather than a CD key. We have streamlined the sign-up and return log-in process to help you spend more time designing and less time logging in.

Improved wall snapping
At the heart of MVH is our revolutionary wall snapping process. Occasionally walls don't fully snap together and sometimes it was hard to see this error. With v2.1 we have added colour coding to visually let you know that the walls have not fully snapped together so you can correct it as soon as it happens

Brand New

Split Level
The first part of a bigger deployment you can now place windows or doors across levels. This is great for homes with windows spanning 2 floors as shown.

Ceiling
v2.1 allows you to place objects like fans and lights on cathedral ceilings just like you could do previously with a traditional flat ceiling.

Houses in the Menu
For the first time Houses are now part of the MVH menus. This means you can now preview builders houses from directly within MVH. Keep an eye on this menu as more designs get added.

Door placement
Doors and windows can now be placed over a node (the little blue blocks in the corners of rooms). This make placing objects like large bi-folding doors across rooms possible.

Roof
Need to see a solar hot water system on your roof? Now you can.

New Products
In this release we have further expanded the Bristile range of roof tiles added more pre made rooms to help you design your perfect house, uploaded some new window facades and added some bits to put on the roof now that you can.

Along with the above v2.1 welcomes Blue Haven Pools to MyVirtualHome for the first time with a small range of pools with many more on the way soon.

Refined

As with every release we have a lot of work under the hood to support our future direction. This includes ongoing bug squashing through to major architecture changes. Read all about the new features and bug fixes below.

Maximise to "Coverscreen Mode"
The System Options now contain a setting to allow MVH to use Window's Coverscreen Mode when selecting to maximise the application window.
This Coverscreen Mode setting uses the entirety of the screen to display MVH, hiding both application window borders and the Window's Task Bar.

Crash Dump Upload
The MVH Launcher now contains the ability to collect information, specific to MVH, in response to a crash and send this information to CDS for review. This functionality is controlled by an 'opt in' setting ensuring that no information is ever sent to CDS without the express permission of the user.

Export to Render

MVH can now export a house scene to an external rendering package. In this way, builders can have their homes modelled in MyVirtualHome, a tool that is much quicker and easier for home building than traditional CAD packages, and then export the home to create a high resolution render/s.

Change Video Options without restarting MVH
The vast majority of video options can now be modified without requiring a restart of MVH. The only Video Settings which require a restart of MVH to take effect are:
• Rendering API
• Image settings
• Anti-Aliasing

Snapping System Changes
Significant changes have been made to enhance how objects, such as garden path and driveway segments snap together. These changes will allow users to build tailored paths even more quickly and easily than before.

User Interface (UI) Changes
Many "behind the scenes" changes (architectural) have been made which allow future alterations to the UI to be made quickly and subsequently pass the results on to users seamlessly. These changes include:
Application Programming Interface (API)
We have moved from a single UI to a comprehensive API allowing for cleaner and simpler development, maintenance and support for multiple UI's.
Dependency Manager
A simple, flexible and extensible system to handle the way in which any UI element ensures the availability of all required resources, such as JavaScript libraries, translation files and cascading style sheets.
Similar Managers have been implemented to handle:
• Translations
• UI layout regions
• Messaging
• Persistence

Service Presentation Factories
A cleaner, more maintainable system for delivering both content and functionality in light of our Multiple UI : Single Client model.

Flipping Changes
Extensive changes have been made to allow MVH to 'flip' complex objects (i.e. objects with a complex, or multi-level subcomponent parent; child; sibling composition). Previously MVH was only able to support the flipping of simple objects.

MVH Launcher Details Connection Issues
Additional details have been added to the relevant Launcher dialogues to assist users in resolving connectivity issues.

Moved Lightmapping to another Process
Windows operating systems place a limit of 2G of memory to be allocated to any single process. Both MVH and MVH Lightmapping processes benefit greatly from increased system resources.
Moving the Lightmapper out into it's own process has greatly increased the resources available to both processes, increasing performance.

Bug Fixes
• Deleted walls no longer cut the ceiling exposing the sky-box in some situations
• Julian Date now correctly affects Sun position
• Animations no longer 'lock' if the object is flipped while animating
• HomeShare Dialogue is now updated correctly on new additions to a users HomeShare
• Home Properties are now correctly updated after saving to HomeShare
• Various property strings have been renamed for clarity
• Issues relating to user-names containing spaces have been resolved
• 'Splitting' a wall no longer moves the chair-rail
• Gutter geometry now correctly updates after a rooms outline has been changed
• Ridge-capping component slot no longer overwrites the associated roof material slot
• Various issues with Baluster, Rails and Newels slots have been addressed
• Component slot highlighting is no longer maintained after the object has lost focus
• Various layout issues have been addressed in the UI
• Various asset issues have been addressed
• Various user string translation issues have been addressed
• A range of corrections have been made to asset names, short descriptions and long descriptions
• Ligthmaps are now shown to users that access a a home that has owner-restrictions: editing locks set
• Reflective wall objects placed on a wall above 2.4m no longer show reflections from outside the room.
• Moving from a dual-monitor system to a single monitor system without restarting MVH no longer causes UI layout issues
• Issues with memory management when working with very large homes have been addressed
• Modified door orientations are no longer reset during an unrelated 'Undo' step
• Various assets have had issues with their 'Alternatives' list resolved
• Various catalogue ordering issues have been addressed
• Recessed lights are now correctly rendered in reflections
• Various assets with horizontal placement issues have been modified
• Lightmaps are no longer hidden from some users when loading a home that has been saved with Owner Restrictions: Editing enabled
• MVH was misinterpreting specularity values for some materials; this issue has been addressed.

The home achieved a BASIX rating of 77 for water efficiency, and 79 for energy efficiency. The home faces north to achieve maximum benefit from the sun’s warming ability during winter, and appropriate shading to reduce thermal exposure during summer. High levels of insulation were used in the walls, ceilings and roof to control heat flow throughout the year. Sustainably managed hardwood flooring and wool carpets have been used because of their high environmentally friendly qualities. Electricity is supplied to the home from a 3 kW tracking Solar Stand Alone Power System and a generator for backup. Fluorescent down lights have been fitted throughout the home, and light / motion sensors have been fitted in high traffic areas to minimize power consumption. The stove and oven is all gas. Hot water is from a gas boosted 40 tube Solar Water Heater. Ceiling fans and cross ventilation provide for summer comfort and two slow combustion wood fires add comfort for winter. 84,000 litres of rainwater is collected and stored, using a Solar Powered Pump to supply water to taps, toilets, showers, dishwasher and clothes washing machine, all of which were chosen for their low water usage. A Biolytix Waste water treatment system accepts all the household waste water for treatment using a complex organism based ecosystem, the outflow being used for sub-surface irrigation of gardens and lawn. The household has become completely self sufficient for power and water, while ongoing costs are kept to a minimum for infrequently replacing LPG cylinders, and some diesel fuel for the backup generator during prolonged overcast weather.

A computer is made up of several components today we are going to talk about the ones that make a difference when using MyVirtualHome. That is the CPU, the GPU the HDD, RAM and a screen.

CPU - Central Processing Unit or Processor - How fast MVH can do things..

The first is the CPU or Processor as it is commonly called. There are basically 2 options here AMD or Intel. At MVH we prefer Intel and have been doing some great work with them around multi core processor use.
We recommend a processor speed of 1.6Ghz or faster. Dual core (ie: 2 x 1.6Ghz) is better again and even better again is a quad core (4 x 1.6Ghz) MVH will love you for it. Currently we support multi core processor use for lightmapping (calculating the shadows and making it look more lifelike as shown in the image). This will happen twice as fast on a dual and 4 times as fast on a quad core. In the near future we will be supporting multi core use in all facets of MVH. So if you want something for the future go with a quad core.
For commercial use we recommend a minimum of dual core at 2Ghz.

Graphics Card (GPU) - How good MVH can look.

The 3D Graphics card is the next piece of the puzzle. The GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) as it is known is the part that will make MVH look good or make it look amazing. Older PC's may not have a 3D GPU at all and some business only PC's will not. Because MVH is built on games technology we love PC's that are setup to play games. Things to look for when buying a PC are marketing terms like, Ultimate Gaming machine, or great for HD video etc. These PC's will have good graphics capabilities. Graphics cards come from 2 main players once again. They are ATI and nVidia. They also come in 2 options, on board and dedicated (also known as descrete). The onboard graphics cards are built into the main motherboard (circuit board) and are designed for light 3D use. MVH will run with an onboard graphics card but the real video cards come with dedicated RAM on them and are a separate component. We recommend a minimum of 128Mb RAM on the card but MVH will use as much as you can give it. At the time of writing this 1Gb (1024Mb) is the biggest dedicated card you can buy. You can also link them together with technology called SLI from nVidia and Cross Fire from ATI and get twice the bang for twice as much money.
For commercial use we recommend a dedicated GPU with at least 512Mb of RAM.

RAM - How many things you can have open at once.

I like to consider RAM as my desk space. The bigger my desk the more stuff I can put on it. If you have lots of RAM things can be accessed far more quickly. MVH loves to use your RAM and its cheap to buy. We recommend 2 Gb (2048Mb) or more.
For commercial use we recommend 3Gb or more of RAM (Note: Over 3Gb requires 64 Bit OS)

Hard Drive - How fast houses can open.

I see lots of advertiing for hard drives that talk about size (1Tb etc.) But as we know size is not everything. :) Speed is what it is all about. Hard drives come in different speeds. 4800rpm being the slowest. I always like to go with a smaller faster drive. 7200rpm is currently the fastest drive you can find in a laptop and 10,000rpm in a desktop however the new solid state drives (no moving parts) are faster yet again. These are however quite expensive at the moment. If you buy a fast processor and a slow hard drive the processor will not work as fast as it can because the hard drive can not feed the info to it. Hard drive speed (combined with the CPU) will determine how fast MVH can load a home etc.
For commercial use we recommend a 7200rpm or faster drive.

Screen size - What size is right for you.

Completely up to your preference but as a general rule you won’t find good graphics cards in laptops with anything smaller than a 15” screen. The big graphics systems have 17” (or bigger) screens.
Note: The larger your screen resolution the more GPU power you will need to get a good result.

I hope this helps your purchase. Happy vuilding.

August 3D Update

Generation 2 of MyVirtualHome enables it to be easily downloaded by anyone in just a few minutes due its small size. As a result we have many blogs distributing our home design software. Thanks to everyone who has helped thus far.
